I have been very fortunate in that I have not been taken for a ride yet however it is not for a lack of effort on the part of the unscrupulous. Writing scams abound and sooner or later you are going to encounter one.

Bidding for work on eLance and GetAFreelancer is a great source of profitable work and as you would expect, I'm frequently asked to provide samples of my work. That's nothing unusual and I'm happy to do so, however when a project provider asks for 500 words on a topic they specify as a sample, I shy away. The reasoning is simple, if 10 people bid, that is 10 articles produced and it has cost the project provider precisely - £0! If you're asked to provide a sample on a specific topic, by all means do so but keep it below 200 words unless they are going to pay you.

A friend of mine, Dawn, writes poems as a way of getting through her daily drudge working as an administrator in a retirement home. Over time she has accumulated quite a collection of very funny poems and I am in the process of editing and arranging them into some sort of order suitable for publishing. Dawn has already encountered the "vanity" publisher who for a fee will publish her work and promises worldwide exposure. Vanity publishers have their place if you wish to publish your writing for use as a commercial offering to promote your company or simply as an off-the-wall Christmas present to friends and family. In the real world, vanity publishers have very little to offer a writer in terms of editing, presentation and most of all, marketing your work. Stay away from any agent or publisher who asks for money upfront!

If you have a new client asking you to do some work, it pays to check them out beforehand. You can do this simply by using Google and at the very least you are looking for some sort of presence such as a legitimate website or a listing in the Yellow Pages. Be wary of new clients asking you to produce large amounts of work - new clients rarely do this in real life, preferring a test project being completed before giving you larger projects. You may get caught up in the excitement of winning a decent sized writing commission only to be disappointed when the work is delivered but payment does not materialise. If the client happens to be in another country, just what are you going to do?

Following on from this, even if you have an existing relationship with a client, do not be afraid to ask for some money upfront or in stage payments as you deliver a large project. If a client baulks at doing this, then you should be wary of taking the project on. I've only been left unpaid once, and fortunately for a small project, but the bitter after taste is still with me so take notice and don't let this happen to you.

You can also help yourself by not broadcasting your inexperience as a writer. Many budding writers still have their day job to handle, or are otherwise engaged in the child rearing and domestic industries and are writing to put some extra money into the budget. While there is nothing wrong being a stay-at-home mum (I'm after all a stay-at-home dad) you don't need to tell a potential client. I'm not saying this is a guaranteed way to attract a scam artist, but some people will definitely take advantage if you let them.

One golden rule is always, and I mean absolutely always, get the payment terms sorted out before you start any work. Establishing what you are going to be delivering is also crucial. What you are looking to do here is to specify exactly what you have to produce and when and how you will be paid. Bear in mind that a project provider may also be new to using a writer so adopting a straightforward professional approach will demonstrate a business attitude that can only reflect well upon yourself. The real benefit however, is to make sure everyone knows what their obligations are and when to deliver on their promises.

Anyone who travels around a lot knows that planning contributes towards making the trip a success. Certainly, the unplanned jaunts and routes taken in a trip come as side-kicks or bonuses--- in both ways, making your trip ripe in experience. However, without the bone structure of planning you will fall face-down-in-the-earth.

The foundations of any document are the planning of its "rhetorical strategy". To get one's point across to an array of audiences, as wide as possible, is the main focus of most document writers. One needs to be clear in purpose of the message to be conveyed through the project. When the purpose of the writing becomes clear, this becomes easily possible. Some of the major points involved in creating a successful document presentation include the following:

PURPOSE

AUDIENCE/READER/VIEWER

SPEAKING/WRITING TECHNIQUES

The PURPOSE here involves in asking yourself the aim of your report and the final effect that you want to convey .The essence of the writing depends on the way it is an effective deliverance of its content. A good writer sticks to the point without unnecessary dalliance though minute digressions, and is effective in supplying related anecdotes and examples to draw parallels.

While writing, keep in your thoughts who you are writing for. This is where the importance of READERS arise. Research and surveys on the needs and tastes of your readers can become a direction to taka, as well as making notes of your overview. You must not focus on a wider range, but target a particular group. You might even have to change your style and adjust your vocabulary in trying to cater towards your target readership. However, the basic aim and structure of your report fails if you make too many core compromises.

In the case of WRITING TECHNIQUES, you must adapt a strategic approach, categorize the different parts of your report taking time to think, and answer questions pertinent to each category. After you have done this initial stage of preparation, you will be confident and focused to go on with your writing. Organize your planning stages thinking about questions that are about to rise, resolving them and provide further clarification. Set the style, design, format and lay-out to attract the inquisitive mind.

Now, let us illustrate the above mentioned approach to writing, through the example of composing a job letter. Considering the purpose of the writing it is to be kept in mind that a resume highlights your strengths without indulgence into false-praise of yourself, which could lead to much embarrassment and ultimate rejection. However, you’ll also want to set up some positives that will help you stand out from a flurry of other applicants. Do your homework well, so that you’re not grounded in qualifications, abilities and mental strength required for the job. A half-hearted application will yield no responses.
In case of a job resume, your reader is probably a panel of very well-qualified and well-experience professionals in their field, so be wary of this.

A business of your own can be extremely rewarding. There is a certain satisfaction of knowing that all of your long hours and hard work will only be benefiting “you” and not nameless, faceless executives. But, is your business benefiting you the way you want it to?
There are millions like you who own a home-based business, and everybody wants to make a future out of it, but there are some questions that one has to answer to actually pin-point where you stand.

When you set out your business what was your vision and where do you stand today?

Was it to find freedom from the shackles of your boss?

Were you thinking that this sort of business has the potential for income beyond any limit?

Was it simply to spend more time at home?

Whatever you wanted to do, have you managed to accomplish the points you set yourself? And, what is really important is that whether you are enjoying what you are doing, and whether it is something in which you stand out?
If you do not have the answers to the above question, you should contemplate and think about a few things before you begin afresh. You could try and find answers to these questions and I am sure you will know what you are doing and what you want to do.

Do you know the priorities for your business?

Do you enjoy the undertakings that you do?

How does your business make profit?

You will find that if you could take time out of some of the other duties, the ones you find most boring, the time saved will allow you to concentrate of your business, thereby generating profit and a love for your work.
Until a few years ago, it was economically difficult to assign an additional workforce for your home-based business. Even now, small businesses find it difficult to work with a lot of people especially if they are not economically strong. But, with the internet, new avenues have opened up and it is no longer necessary to work to engage staff. Most of today’s business can be outsourced, which allows home based business owners the leverage to give more time to obligations that a home made business has to work with, i.e. support staff. They could be the accountant who settles financial matters or a website designer who would maintain and handle your website. A virtual assistant can look after the administrative duties while other programmers can look after the security of the website and the business generated from the website each day.
It is very important that we assess what you love about your business and how tasks can earn you the most profit. Focussing on these few will be the key for a successful outcome. Outsourcing should be as little or as much as you think is right. Though it might ultimately help your businesses reach its optimum potential. You should not be hindered with the fact that you do not have the resources to hire staff. In this technological age, the right help can make your business the dream you visualized when you began.

While indulging in business writing, you have to take care of some dos and don’ts. You should take special care that your writing is effective in persuading your clientele, rather than driving your client to reject your business proposal. You should also ensure that the tone in which you are writing your business proposal is on a similar level to its proposed reader. You should neither be too formal, nor become too patronizing with the reader. Most importantly, you should avoid common stylistic and grammatical mistakes such as those illustrated in memos, letters and reports. You should avoid the following seven major mistakes while indulging in business writing.

1) Do not use long sentences and paragraphs

An Italian proverb puts across this fact very well: "Think much, speak little, and write less." Shorter sentences are easier to comprehend, and the chances of your business proposal being read are more in this case. In addition, try keeping short paragraphs, restraining one idea to one paragraph, as long paragraphs bore people, in case you didn’t know already.

2) Don’t use unnecessary words

More words do not mean more knowledge. Use necessary business jargon, but do not overload your writing with adjectives. You need not always add ‘successful’ before the word business to emphasize the fact.

3) Avoid complex words

Just because you really like a business term, it doesn’t mean that you have to put it in the middle of a business memo. Always keep in mind that the client may not have the same vocabulary as you do. Instead of impressing them with complex terminology, the actual impact might be quite the opposite. It is the substance, rather than the superficial style that counts.

4) Do not use inconsistent tenses

In case you have to change tenses, do it for a reason. Using the present tense is not bad at all, and using the past tense is not always impressive. An abrupt change in tenses is not pleasing to the eye, and the client can form a very poor opinion about you.

5) Avoid clichés

You have heard them enough, and so have your clients! I am sure they don’t want to hear them repeatedly. Give them something new and keep yourself away from clichés, saving them the agony.

6) Don’t be overly modest when you are writing

As much as you do not want to sound proud, you need not be unduly modest in your style of writing, while stating your achievements. You are out there to promote your business, so always keep that in mind.

7) Never be sarcastic

Avoid sentences with puns and double meanings. Though they may sound witty in your daily life, I am sure your clients will not be interested in sarcasm when you are stating facts. So avoid it like the plague.

Keep the above tips in mind when you want to write in business, and you will surely have better correspondence with your clientele! A little time and effort spent preparing your business draft can do your business a world of good.

Blogs are a great tool for building communities, interacting through them and even marketing the services you provide - they often produce both good and bad results. If you want to gain readership from your blog, you'll have to be a bit more adventurous in the content you produce, have an easy design and market your blog.

What kills a good blog writer is their inability to address their target audience, this means that you have to be clear about the content. If you are not focused, you’ll confuse and lose readers. Grammar is the key in making your blog look professional and typos are another concern for bloggers. Even the most cautious writers have a slip here and there, and this really murders the entire blog. What separates the professional from the amateur is the length of blog post, which should be ideally not too long, but just right. The attention span of most people won't be for long, so keeping the posts short gets you a greater reader base. You also have to keep in mind that you are not just writing for a search engine, so emphasize those keywords, but keep the writing interesting as well. The mantra of getting results from your blog is to keep posting new content. Where most people fail is that they lose interest because it takes time and energy to keep a good blog going. So, keep posting and you will eventually get readers commenting the information you post.

Another important feature of posting is to keep in mind the design of the blog. It is a crime not to have the name of the author in the tag line or somewhere in the blog, especially if it’s a business blog. Blogs without photographs are less visual because they do not enhance your credibility and a very important feature of blogging is the post title. Readers must be able to grasp the gist of an article by reading its headline. In fact, they should be allured by it. Avoid humorous headlines that make no sense and are non descriptive in nature. When you wirte you should also keep in mind that blog updates through RSS or email is very essential, so a subscription is important especially if it is a business blog. There should be a certain structure in the approach.

Using first names often confuses new readers, so it's important for bloggers to keep in mind that there are new readers reading your blog, as well as people who have been reading your blog since you started writing it. A very essential feature of the web blog is to introduce a timeline - a calendar that reviews your posts in chronological order, this provides references to earlier blogs that readers have a choice to go and read. Remember, you can refer to a post you made two years ago, if you think it is relevant.

The marketing of a blog is a must for business bloggers, otherwise your blog may suffer the fate of hundreds of other blogs that are abandoned after several months, due to the lack of communication between the blogger and readers. What you'll need to do is to submit the blogs to blog directories and ping each time a new post is published. This helps in maintaining communication with readers on a regular basis. Web blogs should also have a list of their favorite blogs or websites because this helps the readers in identifying with the blogger and the types of material he or she is interested in reading. This establishes in creating a one-to-one relationship between bloggers and each of its readers. So get started….and… blog….blog….blog… till you drop.

Here are some web marketing concepts that make a difference. Adopting them might just pave the path to your success and of course, customer satisfaction.

Think audience and not market - Have you ever been asked by a web consultant what your market is? Is it 20-year-old college students, or 35-year-old women who hate their husbands? Alternatively, maybe the question itself is wrong. The web is not about markets at all, it is about targeted audiences. In this case, audiences need to be understood, entertained and engaged. In case your pitch doesn't do that, you are never going to establish your goal! Start treating web visitors as an audience and not as market, and in due time you will find what it takes to be triumphant on the Web.

Think people and not customers - Have you ever wondered why half the people you attract to your website (through painstaking SEO changes), hardly buy anything? It is because they have been treated more like customers than people. Yes, that's right. By people we mean two-legged creatures looking for their needs and desires to be fulfilled, by you helping them spend a little money of course.

Incase you didn't already know, they too are looking for the best deal where they have to spend as little cash as possible. They avoid those websites that want to take away their hard-earned money with poor deals. Start treating web visitors like people who want their needs and desires satisfied by you. Surprise of surprise, maybe this will be your giant leap towards web success!

Think emotion and not logic - You think you are a logical person making the most logical and rational decisions, think twice. What about the way you splurged at Disneyworld when you went for a vacation - Can you explain that with sheer rationality? I guess not. When we usually do something, we do it based on what we want and eventually try to rationalize it. My point is - stop trying to appeal to the practical and logical aspects of sales, and start with emotional marketing as soon as possible. Try to understand the emotions of your customers rather than trying to adopt a practical attitude. Try addressing the audience with an emotional view in mind and see the marked difference in your success.

Think marketing and not search engine optimization - I am sure your sole motive is to bring as many people to your website as possible. However, your task does not end there as much as you would want it to. In fact this is where it begins. Attracting more customers is definitely your aim, but if your marketing message is confused and unfocused, due to keyword density and SEO tricks, you have achieved nothing other than wasting other people’s time. This will result in precious loss of potential revenue, so you need to convert your visitors into customers.

Think focus not confusion - I know you would love to go on and on about how wonderful your company is, and what you can do for your customers. However, the problem is that relaying this to the customer will just end up confusing them. So, tell them just what they want to know. Tell them about the product or service you are selling, and why they should buy it from you; be sharp and professional. This is where you should spend your marketing and promotion efforts. This is exactly what you want people to think about when they see your company logo, so focus your communication; don’t confuse customers with irrelevant details.

For a business to be successful, it must first be successful in marketing itself. Companies who hurl ahead of others have invariably started with a marketing plan. A marketing plan should be ideally referred to by the company on a monthly basis to enable the company to operate and function smoothly, but a bi-monthly plan also helps. For small companies, the plan should cover you and business activities for a year as things do change, people leave, markets evolve, and customers come and go. Executing the plan has its challenges, but deciding what to do and how to do it, is marketing's greatest challenge.

A marketing plan cannot be achieved without getting many different people involved. No matter what your size, receiving feedback from all areas of the company, whether finance, manufacturing, personnel, or supply, you should try and involve all the members of the company in creating a long lasting and impressive idea. This is important because for your marketing plan to work, it is necessary for feedback to come from all areas of your company. The key heads of your team can provide guidance on what is realistically achievable and how one can go about achieving it, thus giving dimension to your marketing plan and making it succeed.

The best way to see whether your idea will work is to put yourself in the audience’s shoes. Scrutinize the entire business plan and tear it apart. Leave no loopholes for others to butt in. At the end of it, if you are still convinced that the marketing strategy will work, then and only then, go ahead with it.

Your marketing plan can give confidence to your workers. ‘If the general has things in order before the battle begins, the army behind becomes confident of making it a success’. It is essential that your company associates and the people who work for you feel wanted and feel part of a team. For a marketing strategy to be successful a community feel among its associates is a must and this in return can bring good vibes and maybe potential business to the company.

In cases of smaller business, teamwork is also necessary. Upcoming business owners must find ways to differentiate themselves. Until your firm can latch onto a position in a potential client's mind (become a recognised brand), you will always compete on price. Find the tools to grow your small business. Small business marketing materials, business cards, and brochures are the backbone of your marketing efforts.

Now is the time when big companies also have to compete with small ones, because all smaller companies can have an effect on its bigger rivals. Nevertheless, a company, big or small, should take time periodically to think about their business, and whether it's providing the company, employees and most importantly their customers with what they want. Once the company has successfully implemented its marketing plan, the rest will fall into place soon enough.

Plain Business Etiquette

I've mentioned previously that I have been spreading my wings and venturing into new areas looking for business. Primarily this has been based around the SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) knowledge I've been accumulating, but it has brought home to me a reminder of my very first weeks writing for pay. Making initial approaches for work and how to handle queries and the assignment itself are probably more important than what you actually produce at this stage.

When making an initial approach for an assignment don't pussy foot around. Ask for the work; spell out your idea, or how you will deal with the subject matter and most importantly how you will manage the work and what can be expected.

Below is a real bid I made for ten articles recently:

"Hi - this supplements my bid of $60 for 10 x 400 word (min) articles. The articles will be delivered within 24 hours of receipt of instruction. They will:

1. be 100% original and Copyscape tested prior to submission;
2. in US English or British English as you specify;
3. grammatically correct and free of typos;
4. optimized with the keyword/phrase to your specification;
5. written by me - a native English speaker who splits his time between the US and UK.

I've attached a sample of my writing below and you will find my contact information within this if you wish to discuss this prior to awarding the work.

Recent online examples of my work are to be found at:

http://acceptbyphone.com
www.yourhealthreporter.com/blog
www.supaproofread.com/blog

I note that you have 2 of these projects and I shall bid for this other project also with the same terms.

Regards

Karl "

You may have noticed that it is not personalised and that is simply because I did not know the identity of the project provider, but the rest is straight forward and to the point. I attached a writing sample with this bid, but the bulk of my bid is not concerned with writing per se, it tackles the issues of what, quantity, cost, quality and when the product will be delivered. Some may consider my terse bidding style to be too cold or "in your face", but in fact it is a clear cut approach that leaves little room for doubt as to what I will be providing.

Notice that I have pretty much covered all aspects of the project and provided samples for the project provider to check without having to dig around. Do not put potential clients in a position where they have to do some digging to find out how good you are. Always place your name, email address and any contact telephone numbers at the top of any writing sample that you send out to prospective clients. Invite potential clients to discuss assignments with you prior to awarding the work, as this will show that you actually do care about delivering content that fits their needs.

You may notice that I state the articles will be written by "me" which may seem like stating the obvious but in reality it is not. There are a huge number of content providers that are operating as nothing more than a brokerage or battery farm with people churning out content. I'm a native English speaker and writer, the sample attached is my work and I wanted to make it clear to the client that I was not going to be sub-contracting the work out elsewhere, they were paying for "me" and I was being delivered.

In this particular instance, the bid was successful and I have busied myself writing on the delights of colonic irrigation for the past few hours. Delivery of the work was completed and the client is so pleased he's awarded me the second project that I was bidding on and paid me.

One thing before I leave, after my internet research on colon cleansing products there are memories of images I wish I did not have!

Twisting ideas to promote your client

By now, if you have been reading my posts, you will have gathered that I am not a so-called "creative writer". I do not produce literature. I have no burning desire to write a novel, unless it's guaranteed to be a bestseller ,which will keep me in the style to which I sincerely wish to become accustomed. I am a commercial animal, I write for pay and I look at writing as a means to earn my living and to form the bedrock of a business I am building.

That said, it does not mean that I am not imaginative nor creative with the ideas that flow and am used to delivering work products for my clients. It certainly does not follow that I am in any way less passionate about what I am doing, while I also have a fierce pride in my work, and delivering the very best I can provide for clients. Some of my work is "mindless pap" as I often say to enquiring friends and family and in my honest opinion it is just that - advertising and promotional rubbish. Nevertheless, it is good advertising rubbish and I can say that because it performs the task that my clients wish to achieve and I get paid for producing it.

Today, my work for the most part is not "mindless pap" as my clients and the projects have become more interesting. Writing assignments has started to exercise my mind and imagination to a greater extent, than figuring out how to get 800 words on a paper dealing with Japanese "Geta" shoes, or producing a dumbed down series of articles on alternatives to Viagara. Even when you are confronted with a topic that readily lends itself to a simple churning out of some more advertising rubbish you can exercise your imagination and tackle the subject from a different perspective. I firmly believe that the confidence I have acquired in two years of commercial writing has encouraged me to take alternative approaches to handling a client topic.

Earlier this week I had to write a series of blog posts for a site called Your Health Reporter which promotes altenative therapies, amongst which is the use of a slimming pill derived from a cactus in the Kalahari Desert, Hoodia Gordonii. Your Health Reporter, is a relatively new client for me and initially I started off with the "Lose the keg and get a 6 pack" style of posts for the slimming and fitness products that are being promoted. Last week I altered the style and that produced some incredible results.

Hoodia Gordonii is a Hollywood slimming pill of choice with Ophrah Winfrey and a host of other celebs jumping on the bandwagon. It blocks the appetite receptors in your brain, so you feel full all the time and it is highly effective at helping people to lose weight. Initially my research and writing all focused on the features and benefits of Hoodia and how you too can get a slimmer shape you've always dreamed of, fit into that skimpy bikini without feeling self-conscious and lose weight for a long, healthier life. I think you have the idea by now and that was the approach I took until I broke one of my own rules regarding time management and started reading a post on the BBC website, which actually broke the news behind Hoodia back in 2003.

Rather than writing about Hoodia itself and what a great weight loss pill it was, I posted a brief story on the blog about how the royalties from the Hoodia are changing the lives of the San Tribe of the Kalahari, where the cactus originates from. Royalties from US sales are turning an aboriginal tribe that does not have any concept of money as a medium of exchange into millionaires in one of the most backward, impoverished and harshest environments on the planet. So novel is the idea of money to the San Tribe, that the trustees of the millions of dollars for the San openly stated that they don't think that the current generation of San will actually directly benefit from the money. It will only be when the next generation of "newly" educated children reach adulthood that the trustees think that the money will be used and controlled directly by the San.

The readership of that post has turned the Your Health Reporter blog into a success for my client. Traffic before the post was very small, but then it had only been going a week; however, that post has been the primary route for new readers and visitors to the Your Health Reporter website. My client is happy with the increased traffic, I'm happy because I have a happy client and I also produced a good piece of work as evidenced by the increased audience.

I'm not a "Creative Writer" but never ever think that I'm not trying to write creatively for my clients, my audience and myself.
