[...] I came across Lorelle Van Fossen’s Wordpress blog and had a good rummage around. While having a rummage in Lorelle’s “drawers” I came across a topic dealing with whether we should use proper English or not in our writing and you can find the post that resulted here.
Hi Lorelle - thank you for the topic material and the kind comment!

I like playing around with words too though I think you have a far more important point in there, and that is that we must not lose our readers who are struggling too hard with our work. I don't accept that as writers we cannot challenge our readers nor accept that readers automatically must fall into a class of the lowest common denominator. Indeed, it's a challenge for me to rise to the task of challenging readers not least because they can probably write better than I!

I totally agree with your last sentence. :D We need to learn the rules fully before we start messing with the language. Having lived for long periods of time in places where I rarely heard my native tongue, and when I did, it was garbled and mangled, but I SO appreciated their attempts, I have a better appreciation for the struggles that come with blog writing: finding the words.

I'm not a fan of short cuts in the language like I lk yr blg, but I do appreciate some of the more fascinating uses of nouns for adjectives and plays on words, lending itself towards the creative rather than the destructive use of the language potential.

English is such a limited language, so I love watching it expand. In Spanish, I think there are 11 words for butter, and in English butter is butter unless it is margarine. There is still room for English to grow, but never at the cost of our readers who struggle too hard to understand what we are saying or miss the point.

Thanks for the reminder!
